THE CAFÉ AT BOOKS & BOOKS REOPENS IN CORAL GABLES
Chef Bernie Matz is bringing the South Florida Cuisine menu he is actually serving at The Café at Books & Books on Lincoln Road, South Beach to the Coral Gables location. The menu is basically the same from the black bean hummus to the cream cheese-coconut flan, with some new items like Tuna tiradito topped with watercress salad, capers, and olives; Shrimp, brie and caramelized onion quesadilla served with avocado salsa; and Bernie’s Starter Plate for 2 with black bean hummus, avocado salsa, corn salad, and fish ceviche. Old favorites on The Café menu: Curry chicken salad; tuna melt and grilled sandwiches. Dinner can be paired with any one of the nightly author events, or with a reading group meeting. A separate dining room is available for private events. Aquamarine Grill is open for lunch and dinner Monday - Thursday 11:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.; Friday and Saturday 11:30 am- 11:00 p.m. and Sunday, noon to 10:00 p.m. 11330 Legacy Avenue, Palm Beach Gardens, 561-775-6350 TIME'S UP FOR PACIFIC TIME Pacific Time, Lincoln Road's longest-running high-end eatery, closed abruptly Monday after dinner service. Chef-owner Jonathan Eismann had struggled to keep serving his signature steamed halibut with fresh coriander and lemongrass, miso-rubbed chicken salad and warm bittersweet chocolate bomb but realized he simply could not make the operation work financially. ''Sometimes you just run out of steam,'' said Eismann, 46. ``I've had a 14-year run here. It's a very emotional thing.'' His many longtime employees were shocked by the news, as were customers. Pacific Time's closing comes just weeks after neighbor Cafeteria shut down and colleague Norman van Aken turned off the stoves in his Coral Gables eatery. Since opening in July 1993, Pacific Time has garnered top mentions in Bon Appetit, Gourmet and Food & Wine and consistently placed in The Zagat Survey's list of America's Top Restaurants. Eismann was nominated this year for Best Chef in the South by The James Beard Foundation. Plans for a Design District restaurant are in the works. ACTOR DANNY DEVITO OPENS DEVITO SOUTH BEACH Another Italian restaurant in South Beach? This one’s got the celebrity touch with, at least with the name brand if not with the hands-on participation of actor Danny DeVito. South Florida restaurateur David Manero, whose family has owned and operated successful restaurant businesses since 1950, and who is credited for Sopra, Gotham City, Shore Restaurant and the popular Palm Beach enoteca Vic & Angelo’s, has partnered with the famed actor and with Michael Brauser to create a 10,000 square feet indoor/outdoor fine dining restaurant. “Danny shares in our vision for a quality night on the town,” said Manero who hired a culinary team, spearheaded by Executive Chef Francis Casciato. Chef Casciato brings a traditional Italian Chop House concept to DeVito South Beach with contemporary Italian menu items such as housemade Burrata; the Global Steak Flight , the restaurant’s signature dish that will include premium Kobe steak from three different regions of the world -- authentic Japanese Kobe Beef, Australian Wagyu Rollatini and American Kobe Flat Iron. For pasta lovers the menu featuresThe Porcini Trio with a selection of Porcini Gnocci, Porcini Bolognese and Porcini Fritti. DeVito South Beach will offer an extensive list of Italian wines and a menu of bottled waters. It’d better be good if we are to head Danny DeVito comments: "To put my family name on a restaurant is monumental for me. My family and my friends are what I value most in life.” Manero has hired design group Lynn Interior Designs (L.I.D) to oversee the $6M renovation of the two-story location with a private elevator, reclaimed Chicago brick walls, Venetian chandeliers and Italian marble tabletops. There is an open kitchen, a Venetian-like bar, a cantina-like wine room, plasma televisions, multiple fireplaces and DJ booth. An additional 1,000 square feet of outdoor space emulates an Italian Palazzo with cabanas, a communal dining table and a classic landscaped Italian style porch. DeVito South Beach is open daily for dinner from 5:00pm to 11:45pm weekdays and from 5:00pm to 1:00am on the weekends 150 Ocean Drive, Miami Beach, 305.531.0911. www.devitosouthbeach.com
