Presents….Wines: from Director’s Cut, Rosso & Bianco by Simone Zarmati Diament ![]() LISTEN TO AN INTERVIEW WITH FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA Francis Ford Coppola’s name is forever linked to the Godfather trilogy, to the Vietnam War epic Apocalypse Now. Most of us know him as a five-time Academy Award winning American film director, producer, and screenwriter. But Mr. Coppola is also a magazine publisher, a hotelier, a chef and a vintner… not necessarily in that order… This brilliant, all-American Renaissance man whose career spans the better half of the 20th century and projects itself into the 21st, now presents the moderately priced Rosso, Bianco, and Talia Rose from his Francis Coppola California Winery, as well as a revolutionary concept: the 6 oz. wine by the glass sold at convenience stores everywhere for the wine lovers who want a glass of wine for lunch, picnics, and lounges at the pool at home. Francis Ford Coppola Presents Rosso and Bianco wines were first introduced in 1997 and Rosso Shiraz was added to the repertoire in 2004. The new vintages of Rosso, Bianco and Shiraz sport a new label—a nighttime shot of Coppola's new Sonoma winery, recently christened Francis Ford Coppola Presents ROSSO & BIANCO. The Sonoma winery, purchased in March 2006, is part of Francis Ford Coppola Presents, LLC, a company that encompasses other Francis Coppola branded businesses including food products, resorts, restaurants and publishing. "When I make a movie, I always have to have a theme. Sonoma's theme is 'life.'" That joyous, Italian family feeling extends to the Rosso and Bianco wines. Francis Coppola Presents Rosso 2005 ($11.00). A blend of Zinfandel (51%), Syrah (29%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (20%). It is a buy-it-today, drink-it-tonight wine with a supple texture, ripe strawberry flavors and notes of spice and vanilla. Easy to drink with pasta, pizza or slow-cooking ribs on the grill. Francis Coppola Presents Bianco Pinot Grigio 2006 ($11.00) Pinot Grigio (86%) is blended with a small amount of Sauvignon Blanc (7%) and Chardonnay (7%) and fermented and aged in stainless steel. Crisp, fruity, light with hints of peach, citrus and melon, this wine pairs well with fish, chicken and salads, particularly with creamy dressings. Francis Coppola Presents Shiraz 2005 ($11.00) An easy-drinking, fruity 100% Shiraz, with red fruit aromas and black pepper, it is aged in French and American oak hence the subtle vanilla and toasted oak mellowing the spice and fruit, with soft tannins and a round mouthfeel. The other wines produced at Francis Coppola Presents are: Diamond Chardonnay 2006- $15.00 Diamond Claret 2005- $18.00 Diamond Merlot 2005- $18.00 Diamond Sauvignon Blanc 2006- $15.00 Director's Cut Chardonnay 2006- $20.00 Director's Cut Zinfandel 2006- $22.00 Director’s Cut Pinot Noir 2006- $24.00 Sofia Rose 2006- $15.00 Sofia Mini Non-vintage- $15.00 Sofia Blanc de Blanc 2006- $19.00 | |
