GREAT WINE UNDER $15
By Simone Zarmati Diament

2003 Escudo Rojo, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, Maipo, Chile ($14.99) Escudo Rojo, or red shield (a literal Spanish translation from of Rothschild which comes from “das rote Schild” in German which is the Rothschild family emblem) is the flagship wine of Baron Philippe de Rothschild Maipo Chile. The wine is an assemblage of traditional Bordeaux varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon (58%), Cabernet Franc (8%), with the typical Chilean Carmenère (27%) and Syrah (7%), which lends body, density, color and spicy notes. Subtle aromas of black cherry and spices precede a well rounded wine, rich with vanilla, caramel, liquorice, mocha and spices with smooth and balanced tannic structure and a complex finish. It pairs very well with most any food, from meats and cheeses to rich desserts.
