Bordeaux characteristics without the steep price tag Today’s Baron Philiuppe de Rothschild’s Mouton Cadet is a fruitier, rounder style wine, and a good value for Bordeaux AOC wine on the market. by Simone Zarmati Diament
A wine as well-known as Mouton Cadet relies on continuing to attract wine drinkers. The late Baron Philippe de Rothschild, head of the family estate Château Mouton Rothschild, realized the extent to which the fine wines of Bordeaux contributed to France’s prestige. In 1930, he created this second label wine -- Cadet means second or younger sibling in French -- to market wine made from declassified grapes, which he later even supplemented with fruit purchased from neighboring vineyards. The Baron’s daughter, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, set out to better meet modern consumers’ preferences. Today’s Mouton Cadet is a fruitier, rounder style wine, and a good value for Bordeaux AOC wine on the market. One of the key factors behind the company's undisputed success is the art of blending which results in wine exhibiting regional greatness without the steep price tag.
2003 Mouton Cadet Rouge, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, France ( $8.99) smooth and medium bodied, this wine is an assemblage of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. With a nicely open nose, rich and fruity, with blackberry and black cherry and more complex notes of raspberry liqueur and liquorice, it is smooth in the mouth with soft tannins, plenty of fruit with a long and generous finish.
2004 Mouton Cadet Blanc, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, France ( $8.99) The classic white Bordeaux blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Muscadelle is serious, smooth and perfect for parties The wine has an attractive pale straw color, a fresh nose of white blossom and citrus aromas. In the mouth, ripe summer fruit enhanced by a slight mineral touch and a crisp acidity with a lingering finish. Pair with summer salads and soft cheeses. | |
